The pharmacist by trade is signing copies of her books “Dream Waters” and “Dream World” at the Canandaigua Wegmans on Saturday.
NEWARK — Instead of watching TV, Erin Jensen writes. Sometimes, she writes in the car, waiting to pick up her two kids from school activities.
Whenever she has a bit of free time — and with two kids and a job, free time comes with a cost — she will write. At the very least, this published author will jot down notes, go over plot lines in her head and maybe read over a chapter.
“I just enjoy doing it,” Jensen said.
And it’s paid off for Jensen, who is a pharmacist at the Wegmans store in Newark and published author of two books in what she calls an urban fantasy series.
Jensen on Saturday will be signing copies of her books “Dream Waters” and “Dream World” at the Wegmans store in Canandaigua.
Jensen, whose husband Chris is code enforcement and zoning officer for the town of Canandaigua (and who gets, with their kids Tommy and Johnny, a nice dedication in the first of the series), finished up her first book in April 2016; the second came out on Halloween last year.
Now working to finish up the third in the series, Jensen expects at least a fourth, possibly a fifth.
“Less than a year ago, no one knew I’d written a book,” Jensen said. “Now, people I don’t even know stop me on the street to tell me how much they love my books.”
Jensen, who grew up in the Wayne County village of Newark, started working at the grocery when she was 17. She worked at the Canandaigua store her first year after graduating from pharmacy school.
“It’s the only company I’ve worked for,” she said.
But she’s also always loved writing, composing poetry in college but never a book. She kept her first work a secret for a time, only spilling the beans to family, friends and coworkers until shortly before its release.
The story centers on Charlie Oliver, who sees creatures no one else sees and is transported to the Dream World by the Waters. This ability has him condemned to spend his waking hours in a psychiatric facility.
“You never know how it’s going to be received and what will come of it,” Jensen said. “It’s scary to put that out when you’ve never done it before.”
Readers seem to like it. She’s received some excellent reviews on websites. A critic surprised her early on by reaching out to her and asking about the next installment.
And her hometown fans also have boosted her confidence. When Matt Morano, the Newark store manager, first heard about the book, he approached her about selling it in the store and displayed them beside the pharmacy.
“They went out of their way to promote my book signing and helped spread word about my series,” Jensen said. “The momentum that has given my book sales is unbelievable.”
