As Game of Thrones fans know all too well, George RR Martin has struggled to finish the penultimate novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which inspired the hit HBO adaptation. Martin’s publisher Simon & Schuster has been forced to put back its deadline numerous times since 2012.
The television series overtook the events of Martin’s novels by the start of season six, however, responding to a fan’s query on his website he said: “Winds [of Winter] will be different in some ways, but will parallel the show in others.”
There was a missed deadline at the end of 2015, before the author raised fans’ hopes in January, writing on his website that The Winds of Winter would be released in 2017. In May, however, he said he was still working on the novel.
But some fans are convinced that Martin has, in fact, finished The Winds of Winter – and may even have made solid progress on its follow-up, A Dream of Spring.
