SHEBOYGAN – A one-of-a-kind theater experience is coming to Sheboygan next week.
Beginning Oct. 4, Dare to Dream Theater will be debuting the first-ever staging of the beloved New York Times best-selling children’s book “The Pout-Pout Fish,” as well as a series of special events including workshops, book-signings, lectures, symposiums and artist visits.
“We want to invite the community to join us in this wonderful celebration of creativity as we present a new form of youth theater,” said Rachel Thurmer, Dare to Dream’s founder and artistic director, in a press release.

The performance will be unique because of the age of the cast. This will be a Theater for the Very Young performance. The theater style was developed in Europe more than 25 years ago, and the goal is to have young kids be as immersed in the story as possible.
“Theater for the Very Young (TVY) is an innovative interactive experience for children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years old, designed to harness each child’s natural curiosity,” Thurmer said.
The cast will be four young actors, and while there is a narrative of how the story plays out, the kids will be in charge of dictating where the story will go. This makes every performance of the show different and exciting for both audiences and the cast.
Accompanying the kids will be a number of puppets designed and built by master puppet-maker Annett Mateo. Mateo will also be playing a number of the characters, including Mr. Fish, Ms. Squid, Mr. Eight and others.
“Pout Pout Fish” was written by Deborah Diesen and follows Mr. Fish as he deals with how he sees himself. Mr. Fish has a down-turned mouth that he doesn’t like, so the book is a story of self-image, labels and overcoming challenges. The tale explores how to be better people (or fish) by not judging ourselves or the world by appearances but by character.
The world premier of the show will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan. Although free, reservations are required and seating is limited.
Dare to Dream Theater is a nonprofit youth theater company in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties.
